BIR and Finance mailed $24.9 million in $1,400 stimulus checks to 10,000 residents
The Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Department of Finance mailed $24.9 million in $1,400 stimulus checks to 10,000 residents, Government House said on May 6, 2021.
Government House said the distribution was the first in a series of 10,000-check batches funded through the American Rescue Plan.
The release also said BIR and Finance had previously sent $600 payments under the federal CARES Act II to 41,524 people, or 92% of the roughly 45,000 Virgin Islanders who filed 2019 tax returns.
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said during the May 3, 2021 Government House press briefing that most of the remaining people either did not qualify because their income was too high or had an issue with their 2019 tax filing.
Government House said people who did not receive a $600 stimulus payment and believed they were eligible should contact the Bureau of Internal Revenue hotline at 340-714-9325 or visit BIR offices in Sunny Isle on St. Croix or Red Hook on St. Thomas.
