Bryan administration announced 16th annual Summer Reading Challenge for students in kindergarten through sixth grade

Government House said on May 31 that the 16th annual Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge would run from June 1 through Aug. 5, 2024, for U.S. Virgin Islands students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The challenge was announced by Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. with the Virgin Islands Department of Education and the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums. Students who read five or more books would complete the challenge and be invited to a celebration, according to the announcement.

Government House said kickoff events were held in early May in the St. Croix and St. Thomas-St. John districts and were open to public- and non-public-school students.

Students could register and access tracking sheets through the Department of Education website. The announcement also said students could borrow books virtually through Open Library.

The administration said the first 30 students on each island to apply for a library card would receive a free tablet. It said applications had to be taken to a library for signup.

The announcement listed hours for the Elaine I. Sprauve Public Library on St. John and the Florence Williams Library on St. Croix as 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. It said a signup date and time for Fort Christian library cards on St. Thomas would be announced.
