Bryan names Trevor Velinor as Virgin Islands police commissioner

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. announced on May 14, 2019, that Trevor Velinor, a St. Croix native and special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, had been selected to serve as commissioner of the Virgin Islands Police Department.

Government House said Velinor was a 29-year ATF veteran who had served as special agent in charge of the Columbus Field Division, covering Ohio and the Southern Judicial District of Indiana. It said he had also been promoted to deputy assistant director in the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility and Security Operations in Washington before leaving that position for the Virgin Islands post.

The appointment was made under an agreement between ATF and the Virgin Islands government through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act Mobility Program, which allows temporary assignments between federal, state and local governments.

Bryan said Velinor was scheduled to begin service on June 10, 2019.

According to Government House, Velinor began his law-enforcement career in 1990 in the ATF Orlando Field Office and later served for four years in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He also served as assistant special agent in charge of the Tampa Field Division, resident agent in charge of the ATF Colorado Springs Field Office, and in legislative and intergovernmental affairs roles.
