The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on September 18, 2022, that propane supply on St. Croix was temporarily interrupted that morning, leading the island’s power system to operate on an existing three-day inventory of diesel.

WAPA said diesel inventory was limited because St. Croix does not normally burn diesel and the utility’s financial condition made maintaining large reserves difficult.

The authority said propane service was restored shortly before 10 a.m. on September 18 and that St. Croix immediately resumed burning propane instead of diesel.

WAPA said that if diesel use had needed to continue, it would have explored expedited diesel deliveries or trucking fuel to the plant.
