BMV launched online vehicle registration renewal on Jan. 31, 2020

The Virgin Islands Bureau of Motor Vehicles launched an online vehicle registration renewal system on Jan. 31, 2020.

Under the system, vehicles 6 years old or newer did not require a physical inspection and could be renewed entirely online. Vehicles between 6 and 10 years old were inspected every two years. Vehicles older than 10 years were required to be inspected annually at the BMV, with the renewal then completed online.

The bureau said motorists could register at BMV.vi.gov, access an account to make a payment, and choose to print or receive a receipt by email. Final registration documents and stickers were to be mailed, with delivery projected to take four to six weeks.

The BMV also said insurance agencies were required to send customers' insurance cards to insurance@bmv.vi.gov with the vehicle identification number and customer name in the subject line.

The agency said vehicle owners could renew registrations up to three months before their deadline. It also said additional online services were planned for later in 2020, including applications for driver's licenses and identification cards, disabled placards, personalized license plates and moving permits, as well as online scheduling for written and road tests.
