ST. CROIX — The V.I. Police Department last week made arrests related to domestic violence and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima, On April 9, at approximately 5:25 a.m., police arrested Ian Benjamin, Jr., age 19 of Queen Street, Frederiksted and charged him with carrying a firearm openly or concealed.
According to the news release, during the execution of a search warrant at his residence, officers discovered an unlicensed firearm. Benjamin admitted ownership of the firearm, and was placed under arrest.
Unable to make bail of $50,000, Benjamin was remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility pending his advisement hearing.
Domestic Assault
According to Mr. Derima, On April 9, at around 7:59 p.m., police arrested Khalaf Jerry, age 35 of Coakley Bay Condominiums and charged him with second-degree assault, domestic violence; disobeying a lawful order; interfering with an officer discharging his duties; and first-degree attempted robbery.
According to the V.I.P.D. news release, Jerry is accused of assaulting his companion during a disagreement. The victim sustained injuries to his neck, arms, hands, and back, Mr. Derima said.
Jerry was turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections without bail, in accordance with the territory’s domestic violence laws, pending his Advice of Rights hearing.
