ST. CROIX — The owner of Corner Pocket Grill House and Nightclub, a popular venue located in Kingshill was arrested Thursday after firing a gunshot into the air during an altercation with his child’s mother at the establishment, the V.I. Police Department has announced. The suspect, 40-year-old Jamaal Mingo, also pointed the firearm at a female who was at the grill house and nightclub following a verbal altercation that turned physical, according to the V.I.P.D.

According to the police report, on Tuesday, November 8 at approximately 11:14 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report from a female who stated that she was in an altercation with her daughter’s father, Jamaal Mingo at his business Corner Pocket, and that he fired a single gunshot in the air and waved and pointed a firearm at a family member.

Several witnesses were interviewed and their statements all corroborated with the complainants’ statements, the V.I.P.D. said. They further stated that Mingo was intoxicated and got in a verbal and then physical altercation with some females in the business that continued on the outside of the business. During the altercation, Mingo ran back inside the establishment and returned with a firearm and discharged a shot in the air. He then approached the females and pointed the firearm in the face of one of the women, the report says.

A firearms registration check revealed that Mingo does not have a license to carry a firearm.

Search warrants were obtained to search his official residence of record, his place of business and his female associates’ residences and during those searches a firearm was discovered, the V.I.P.D. said.

Mingo was arrested and charged with third-degree assault, unauthorized possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, unauthorized possession of ammunition, discharging or aiming firearms and first-degree reckless endangerment.

The V.I.P.D. set Mingo’s bail at $100,000 for the above mentioned charges. According to the release, he was also separately charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm after a gun was discovered in a vehicle that Mingo claimed ownership of, according to police. Bail for the latter matter was set at $50,000.

Unable to post bail, Mingo was remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his advisement hearing scheduled for today.
