Is Tiger Roll racing in the 2022 Grand National? Full information on the two-time Aintree champion as Any Second Now and Rachael Blackmore on Minella Times eye glory

Tiger Roll will go down in racing folklore for his back-to-back Grand National wins, but he will not be at the 2022 edition to try and win a third.

A winner at the famous Aintree course in 2018 and 2019, the Irish thoroughbred raced its last race at Cheltenham Festival last month.

Tiger Roll will not compete in the 2022 Grand National

With jockey Davy Russell on board, the Gordon Elliot-trained racehorse enjoyed glory and was backed for more last year with the 2020 race cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

But he was withdrawn from the race by owners Gigginstown House Stud due to excessive weight allocation in February.

Last month, Tiger Roll competed at Cheltenham where, it could be argued, was his spiritual home having won a Triumph Hurdle, a National Hunt Chase and three Cross Country Chases there.

But he was denied a fairytale farewell in the Cross Country Chase as stablemate Delta Work won an extraordinary race.

Tiger Roll looked set for a record-equalling sixth festival triumph but missed out by three quarters of a length.

“I’ve had a win at Cheltenham and I’m disappointed,” said Gigginstown owner Michael O’Leary. “We exploded the dream.

“Tiger Roll is a warrior. He went out on his shield and is the horse of a lifetime.”

Russell added: “He went down fighting. Sure, he is fantastic.”

Jack Kennedy, who rode Delta Work to glory, said: “Obviously everybody would have loved to see Tiger Roll win, but you can’t take away from my horse either.

A total of 40 riders will begin the famous race, which will be screened to millions around the world

“I thought I was always going to get there. I knew I could be the most hated man in Cheltenham on Wednesday evening if I won.”

Without Tiger Roll, Any Second Now is the early favourite for glory in the 2022 Grand National with the final list of 40 runners and riders to be confirmed on Thursday, April 7.

Minella Times and Rachael Blackmore will also be eyeing victory again following their stunning win last year.

The race itself will take centre-stage at Aintree on Saturday, April 9.
