Five Shot Dead at Housing Complex in Puerto Rico, Bringing Island’s Total Homicides for the Year to at Least 235
Puerto Rico authorities said Sunday night that at least five people were shot and killed at a public housing complex in the community of Caimito in San Juan, the capital of the U.S. territory.
According to the Associated Press, police spokesman Axel Valencia said the five individuals were shot outside the Villa Esperanza housing complex. At the time, police had not identified the victims and a motive for the homicides was not clear.
At the time, no one was in custody.
Police reported last month that two men were found dead in an overturned vehicle in the same public housing complex after being shot multiple times.
According to the AP, authorities in Puerto Rico have reported at least 235 homicides on the island in 2022, matching the number of deaths that occurred during the same period last year, when 234 people were reported killed. Puerto Rico has a population of 3.2 million, according to 2020 Census data.
