ST. CROIX — An elderly man who was reported missing Thursday was found dead Sunday afternoon in a vehicle, according to the V.I. Police Department.

The man, identified as 73-year-old Steadroy Meade, was first reported missing by his son who told police that his father was last seen on Thursday between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. An extensive search was led by the V.I.P.D.’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, Mr. Meade’s family and the congregation of the Seventh Day Adventist Church near Mr. Meade’s home and surrounding neighborhoods. Areas where Mr. Meade was reportedly sighted were also searched, the V.I.P.D. said.

However, on Sunday at about 2:55 p.m. the 911 Emergency Call Center received a call of a body in a vehicle in Clifton Hill. Officers drove to the area and were told that the owner of the vehicle sent her minor child to the vehicle and that the child discovered a body in it. An investigation revealed that the vehicle’s inner door handles were inoperable and could only be opened from the exterior of the vehicle, the V.I.P.D. said.

The investigation continues pending an autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office, according to V.I.P.D. Director of Communications Glen Dratte.

Criminal Investigation Bureau Chief, Detective Lt. Naomi Joseph, thanked the community and the family for their support and all who assisted with the search.
