2019 Calypso Queen ‘Blackness’ Repeats Victory Against 14 Competitors to Win 2022-2023 Monarch
The 2019 calypso queen whose stage name is Blackness repeated her victory Wednesday night during the 2022-2023 Calypso Monarch on St. Croix, beating fourteen other competitors for the crown.
Her two closest competitors were former five-time winner, Caribbean Queen, who won second runner-up this year, and Richie Buntin, who won first runner-up and also the Best Social Commentary segment.
But Blackness’s two songs, “We Don’t Like We” and “Music is Music”, which highlighted identity and cultural matters, landed her the victory with a total of 1,822 points, 53 points ahead of Richie Buntin, who ended the night with a score of 1,769. Caribbean Queen finished with 1,676 points.
Blackness received a $10,000 reward, while the first runner-up and second runner-up received $6,000 and $4,000 respectively. There was also a participant prize of $1,000 for each of the other contestants.
Participation this year was one of the highest as fifteen calypsonians vied for the crown, according to organizers.
The competition was held at The Palms at Pelican Cove and was hosted by Daren Stevens (MC Bogle) to a sold-out audience as Virgin Islanders came out in large numbers to enjoy the show.
